Oil and acrylic on canvas

The ‘By Virtue or By Chance’ collection.

Why do we feel such constant need to explain, to define, to make sense of things we cannot fully comprehend? From childhood we are taught that we don’t know what we don’t know,- yet we cling to to the past, dissecting our experiences, building narratives to sustain our identity. We search for patterns only to try and break them, but the resistance and the reactions remain bound to the same frequency. And we continue to underestimate things that happen by chance. What comes next? We circle back on ourselves, we spiral, we wear masks, and block the things that we think threatened us and our identity, and our idea of what that should look like. In our obsession with meaning, we lose the sight of the cause.

Self doesn’t exist. And looking for it just brings more layers and more masks. This new collection separates, unweaves the layers we put on, stripping them back so they no longer serve as cages we live inside. The paintings create bright open space for us to reflect on the relationships with ourselves, with others and with the environment. Vivid in colour, and not afraid of the dark, they invite contemplation, stillness and meditation, questioning all that we thought we knew…
